Mantiq Online
Imam al-Ghazali, a 5th centuary polymath, famous for his works on Islamic jurisprudence and Islamic Legal theory, states in his world renowned al-Mustasfa; “Mantiq (Islamic logic) is the preliminary to all sciences, required for scholarship.” Over the centuries scholars have discussed and developed Islamic pedagogy, and at the heart of almost every reputable syllabus were the three gateway sciences; Logic which aids you in formulating proper thought, Grammar which aids you in articulating your thoughts correctly, and Rhetoric which aids you in communicating your thoughts to another effectively.
Whilst at Q-Iman we have been specialising in teaching Arabic and Islamic Sciences; the sciences of Rhetoric and Logic have been taught as embedded components of our syllabus. Finally, we have launched a 10 week introductory course on Mantiq (Islamic logic) open to anyone who has met the minimum requirements of the programme (see below).
In this course we will cover a a basic primer in Mantiq, namely Isāghujī written by Athīr al‐Dīn al‐Abharī a 7th centuary Muslims scholar and mathematician. We will also explore the historical development of logic as a science in the Muslim world using academic articles, and will contextualise the critique of the science of logic. Whilst we will investigate the various intellectual devices such as logical syllogisms and analogically deductions directly from Isāghujī we will make use of simpler texts in English such as the Trivium for those struggling to appreciate the complexity of some of these devices.
Students will be expected to prepare some lessons in advance by reading articles and portions of the text before coming to class and provide valuable contributions to the discussions. Whilst there is no set examination for the course there will be a short group exercise at the end of the course for which a grade will be awarded and certification of attendance.
Minimum requirements: good familiarity with Arabic grammar and classical legal texts
